Tropical Vacation DestinationFor those hot on the trend of eco-tourism, Taveuni offers a long list of extraordinary learning opportunities. Taveuni is one of the Fiji's northern "forgotten islands." Just how forgotten? Well, electricity on Taveuni is found only in those places that have their own generators. How's that for forgotten?
Taveuni's history is rich and colorful. This cigar-shaped island runs less than 26 miles long and seven miles wide. There are approximately 12,000 Taveuni residents, proud descendants of formidable and fearsome warriors. Today, most of them continue to live in their native villages as they have for centuries.
Taveuni's natives are considered to be the friendliest people in all of the South Pacific. Open, curious and confident, they are delighted to meet new people and share stories back and forth. On our island, guests have many opportunities to visit local villages and schools and support local markets rich with handcrafted soaps, arts, crafts, and clothing.
Not just a cultural wonder, 80 percent of this extraordinary island is covered by rich verdant rainforest. Within the jungle are found every native bird to Fiji--including the Fiji Petrel, a bird so rare it's only been sighted live once in the past 151 years--as well as many other flowers, trees and animals which are found in few other places in all the world.
At Maravu Plantation Resort, you'll have the opportunity to enjoy guided bush and plantation walks, hikes to hidden waterfalls, kayaking and four-wheeling. You'll also have the chance to take courses in Fijian medicine, cooking, language, and hear hour after hour of native folk tales told by genuine Taveuni storytellers. Take part in weekly traditional dances, feasts and ceremonies, and listen nightly to the music of traditional native musicians. We are honored by your interest in our country and our culture, and we look forward to introducing it to you personally. Welcome.
