For all its relative anonymity, you may be surprised to learn that Taveuni is Fiji's third-largest island. The history of this magical spot, referred to as the Garden Island, goes back centuries. Pirates and other seafarers knew to back into her beaches and coves, because the waters that flowed from her dramatic falls were pure enough to refill their enormous water tanks.

The beaches of lush Taveuni are beautiful. All are soft underfoot and shimmer at sunrise. All told, this lovely island is home to five beaches and close to nine more located on nearby atolls. For white sand varieties, visit the nearby atolls. The majority of the beaches on Taveuni proper are black--thanks to her rich, volcanic history. However, a few shimmering, soft gold sand beaches do exist here.

Whether black, white or golden, all of the beaches of Taveuni or ideal for swimming and snorkeling. But experts agree that two of them are worthy of special recognition: Lavena and Matei. The former is found on the eastern stretch of the cigar-shaped island. The latter is conveniently located near the airstrip on the northern tip of Taveuni.
